When you get the offer—congratulations! But before you sign on the dotted line, there are key questions every candidate should ask to ensure the move is the right one.

1. What does success look like in this role?

Ask the hiring manager: "What are the top 3 outcomes you expect in the first 6 months?" If they can't articulate them, you're stepping into a vague situation.

2. What are the biggest challenges the person will face?

This gives you insight into the real work, not just the glossy job description. It also reveals how honest and open the company is.

3. How is feedback and performance managed?

Will you have regular one-on-ones? A formal review process? This matters if you want growth—not stagnation.

4. What's the team culture like, and how is it evolving?

Ask to speak with a peer or team member. Culture is lived daily—not what's on the website. Choose an environment where you can thrive.

5. What is the growth path beyond this role?

If your ambition is long-term, you'll want to know what lies ahead. Is there internal mobility, training, mentorship?

6. What is the hiring manager's leadership style?

Understanding how your manager works—decision making, priorities, support—can make or break your experience.

7. What's the onboarding plan for me?

How will you be set up for success? Good companies invest in your ramp-up.

8. What's the company doing to retain and develop employees?

Pay, perks, and titles matter—but culture, engagement, and learning matter more over time.

Conclusion

An offer is a starting point—not the finish line. Use this checklist to evaluate whether you're making an empowered move. Your future self will thank you.
